FLASH ANIMATIONS

2 months after the eruption of May 2004, the Volcanologic Observatory of Piton de La Fournaise, record seismic activity again. The sismicity raises day after day till 100 earthquakes per day on August 12th 2004 when the authority decided to forbid the public access.
On Friday the 13th around 2:15am a crisis begins and 25 minutes later the magma springs out of a first break situated in the Dolomieu summit, 2500m of altitud. This break will not last long and stop any activity in the early evening.

A second break opened on the East side of the Dolomieu. During the day of friday August 13th 2004, the activity of this 1 km long break is mainly situated at 2200m of altitud. A cone was built and the lava flows quickly reach 2 km of lenghth.

The following days, the magma will progress through tunnels and reach the National Road on August 22nd at 3:13pm, 8 km from its crater. The lava will wind through the forest during 3 days to finally reach the ocean on August 25th at 3:45am and a second lava flow will flow into the ocean on August 30th at 9:45pm. A platform large of 7 hectares was built in the sea.
On the 30th in the evening a new kind of activity will begin on this platform. The seawater infiltrating into the over 1000 degrees celsius lava, especially during the high tide , induces violent magamphreatic explosion .

2 cones are built by the ocean the following days. During the night of September 1st through 2nd, right after midnight, a new lava flow reaches the ocean close to Saint-Philippe. This eruption stopped in a few minutes on September the 2nd at 7:15pm.
Unexpectedally the eruption revived on September 5th around 9:15am. On the 6th in the morning, a very fluid lava exits at 1900m of altitud. The new lava flows progress quickly till 450m of altitud, 2km from the road and stop there on September 9th 2004 at 4:15am. This is the end of the 2nd phase.
During the night of Septemnber 11th, the eruption gets back in activity. It is situated in the crater. This 3rd phase is weak and ends on October 3rd around 3:00 am.
A new phase, as weak as the third begins àn October 4th and ends the 14th. After 2 months of activity in 4 different phases, the eruption finally ends.
