| After a month of relatively important seismic activity, from 10 to 30 per day, plus the continuous inflation of the summit crater, a new seismic crisis began on Sunday 2nd of May 2004 at 7:03pm. 7:36pm, a first break opens on the south-west side of the crater Bory, at about 2500 meters of altitud. This break will be active only a few hours.
A second break will open on sunday night in the south of the Enclosure, over the crater Theresien Cadet about 2000 meters high. The weather is terrible during the first 8 days and it is impossible to walk or fly to the site of the eruption. We will have to wait until Monday 10th in the morning to finally take the first pictures in helicopter. We can observe 2 craters with few sporadic projections. |

| The lava flows towards the Rampart of Tremblet between the Piton de Bertz and the Nez Coupe of Tremblet. On Friday 14th, only one crater is still active and almost closed, with big flames and some projections. The lava has built a long tunnel along the rampart to the Nez Coupe of Tremblet. A very fluid lava comes out along the high gradients. During the night of the 14th and 15th, the lava will flow down to 460 meters of altitud, 1,8km away from the national road.
Before dawn on Saturday night the activity becomes more explosive and at 6:00am the tremor gets higher and the webcam on Piton de Bertz shows the crater reopened. Fountains of viscous lava reach over 100 meters of height. Some lava flows not very fluid are still running along the rampart but the activity will be completely over in the big gradients. That week-end, the volcanologic observatory begins to record about 20 seisms per day. In a recent past, that kind of seismicity preceeds the end of the eruption, 3 or 4 days delay. Actually, the activity stopped on Tuesday 18th at 4:15pm. |
