January 7th 2004 at 9:30am, a sismic crisis begins under the summit crater Dolomieu. The instruments mesure from different stations of the Volcanologic Observatory indicate important deformations of the mount La Fournaise.

Different than the 1 hour lasting sismic crisis, this one will last 40 hours. The injection of magma goes towards Noth-East from the Enclosure, towards the Osmunds Plain.

On January 9th at 2:45am, the eruption begins: a break long of 300 meters at 1500 m of altitud and passing through the crater Haug (1931), among the Plaine des Osmondes.

The eruption is weak and the lava flows are not more than 1,5 km length.

January 9th in the afternoon, only 4 opening were still active. The eruption will stop on January 10th around noon after 30 hours only of activity.
