October 2005
English and American version
After the spectacular eruption of February 2005, the Piton de La Fournaise kept quiet more than 3 months.
At mid june, the first signs of a close eruption appeared with a brutal increase of the sismicity during a week and a inflation of the summit. On July 7th, all the signs are here indicating an imminent eruption. This slow process will last till October 2005.

On Tuesday October 4th, a sismic crisis happened around 1:30pm and the eruption began at 2:26pm in the crater Dolomieu.Three breaks opened between the Bory and the Dolomieu craters. The most active break was situated by the Piton Kaf ( Eruption of june 2003 ). The site was immediatly forbidden to public.
Around 8:00pm , the weather got terrible during 36 hours making it impossible to observe. On Thursday of october 6, the sun finally shined over the eruption, showing only one fountain of lava left by the Piton Kaf. It built a 15 meters heigh crater open on the east side where a small lava flow could be seen. Most of the lava was escaping through tunnels with some exit points here and there in the crater Dolomieu, covered with hot lava.
October 6 and 7th, the new crater was subjected to intern collapses, sometimes preventing the lava to emerge. The lava always ended up finding its way through. In the night of the 7th and 8th, after a new collapse, the magma finally found its way through a tunnel.
During October 8th and 9th, the new crater slowly clogged up and the site was reopened for visitors. Till october 16th, up to 15000 people visited the official site called "la Soufriere" to observe a pretty clogged crater with some lava ocasionnally springing out and some small lava flows (pahoehoe) left in the Dolomieu In october 17th, the bad weather was back making it impossible to watch the end of the eruption which ended abruptly, in the fog, at 1:10pm, the same day..
