| Three months after the first signs of acrtivity, "La Fournaise" finally woke up. The professionals and lovers of the volcano were longing to this unamed erutpion: After successive swellings on a big area of the volcano, suspicious emissions of radons and several strong seismic crisis, finally 4 breaks open January the 5th at 11pm, close to the Nez Coupé ofSte-Rose, at 1850 meters of altitude. | Fountains of lava, up to 45 meters, are springing from them. The show is dantean , the lava flows are very fluid and go down the steep gradients till the "Plaine des Osmondes". The activity decreases quickly and January 9th, the lava flows disappear. In the forming crater , we can see some projections high of 3 meters . But the intensity and the length of the seismic crisis before the eruption were so strong that the scientists expect a second phase of the out of enclosure eruption. The strange similarities between this eruption and the Ste-Rose eruption in 1977 - concerning the place where the lava went out and the lava consistancy - leave much to doubt. January the 12th, a break opens at the Bois-Blanc Rampart base, in the "Plaine des Osmondes" at 1050 m of height. in less than 48 hours , the lava channel will reach the National Road, and then, the sea ... The fight between lava and ocean offers a spectacular and unforgettable show, watched by numerous dumbfounded January, 16, afternoon , the eruption stopped suddenly after providing 10 hectars of new land to the island. |
